“Digital Citizenship
and Safety” course

Nowadays we
are all connected with the world wide web, the Internet, and other
technological breakthroughs. However, we sometimes do not even notice that we
give all our personal information out in social network accounts and react to
social engineering from suspicious users. That’s why it is important to
implement the knowledge of this sphere in our educational environment.
We, as
teachers, have to develop learner’s digital competence, including teaching how
to:
- · Value and protect your personal information using passphrases and 2-factor authentication, when logging onto any learning platform or social network account; create some passphrases together and practice them as tongue twisters during the class
- · Behave when you use computer or something else accessible to everyone else; that means teach students how to clear their personal data from that computer after having used it
- · Find reliable resources, always check the domain address; analyzing article or information found (“3” approach) and brainstorming list of criteria for choosing good resources together
- · Not to be caught in a net by clicking on different advertisements and taking dubious tests online; speaking out the possible consequences of such actions and providing life case study
- · Differentiate what is worth posting in social networks and what not; warning learners about the hacker’s ability to trace their location and so on, analyzing learners’ own accounts.
So, in the
era of the Internet and new technologies it is essential to stay reasonable.
Show your learners that world wide web can be both dangerous and safe – it
depends on how they use it.
